Specialist support for speech, language and communication difficulties and associated complex needs
We are an independent, non-maintained school based on the south coast of England in Bexhill, East Sussex and we have residential and non-residential pupils from all over the country from ages 7 to 19. And everything we do is carried out by experienced, dedicated specialist staff in a caring, supportive and understanding environment.
It's fun, I really like the staff because they are so supportive here. I just love St Mary's.
Thank you for visiting the St Mary’s School and College website. Since 1922, it has been our mission to ensure that children with additional special needs receive the support they deserve to enable them to achieve their potential and take their place in the community.
We are based in Bexhill, in East Sussex, close to Hastings and Eastbourne, and offer both residential and non-residential places in our main school and college. Parents and Local Authorities from around the country choose St Mary’s as first choice for their children from ages 7 to 19.
St Mary’s is a total communication environment. This means we utilise a range of approaches that enable our children to succeed in their development of communication skills. All of our staff, including those in non-child facing roles, are trained in sign-supported English. Our signing team provide assistance for parents who wish to learn to sign in order that they can support their child in the home. In addition, we value and proactively invest in communication and learning technologies.
Through our Aspire Vocational Centre and curriculum, formally opened by the Countess of Wessex in April 2017, we offer a unique range of vocational and social learning and opportunities. We have a number of enterprises, including a café, general store, car wash and hairdressers, through which our pupils build on their work and life skills whilst gaining relevant qualifications.
The Interim Assessment and Placement Centre provides a valuable environment which enables us to work with more complex pupils. We provide these pupils with an intense programme of support after which they may move into the main school at St Mary’s or to another appropriate placement, which can include returning to mainstream school.
We are very proud of our pupils’ achievements, our relationships with parents and the hard work of our staff which creates a unique atmosphere in which pupils are able to live and learn together.
